Out with a bang!
Whilst the Derby Young Anglers’ Project will be supporting a number of entrants in the upcoming Canal and River Trust’s National Celebration of Young People and Angling, and we also have a canal based drop-shot workshop planned for October, the curtain came down on the main DYAP programme last Saturday with the now traditional Points Pairs Match. Held at Woodrow’s Pond Darley, this event sees a young angler and a coach paired up, with the placings decided on a points system, one point for a perch, two for a roach right up to eight points for any participant fortunate or skilful enough to bag a crucian carp. (See photo of score card to get more of an idea!) Fifteen pairs participated, Winner on the day, and supported by Rich Pope, was Josh Barlow. Both Josh and second placed Yousaf Gulzar, who was paired with Mark Rogers, targeted gudgeon which turned out to be a successful tactic on the day. A close third was Jack Swindell aided by Andy Hume. Both Josh and Jack will be competing in the CRT’s National Celebration. All entrants received a participants’ commemorative medal adorned with the new DYAP logo (see photo) and all caught. The skill level on display was impressive with most of the participants now able to fish independently. The session was combined with the presentation of CAST Certificates, an award system that is a key part of the DYAP’s programme and delivery. A significant number of participants reached Level 2, the level that has equivalence to The Scout Angling Badge. Two anglers have achieved above that level. Ben Lombardo has succeeded at a wide range of angling activities including casting accurately with rod and reel, tying up flies, helping other youngsters and even catching a rudd with fly tackle. Ben, who is still a Cadet, is another one taking part in the upcoming CRT’s National Celebration. One level up from that we have Ecclesbourne student and air cadet Josh Bennett, who has achieved CAST Level 4, currently the only DYAP angler to have reached that level. Josh has match fished, sea fished, studied fish, caught a wide range of species and weights, tied up complex rigs and coached young anglers. A huge well done to all those who received CAST Awards.
A draft programme for 2025 is taking shape. The New Year will see our popular Rigs and Flies workshops take place where participants will have the opportunity to tie up flies and delicate rigs as well as being able try their hand at using a fly rod. The light lure and drop-shot sessions have proved a hit and these will be held again next year. Our popular general coarse fishing introduction and development programme will be retained and we’ll try and meet the requests for a carp workshop and an evening session for adult beginners/returners. If you are not on the email distribution list for DYAP events and wish to be so please contact the Earl of Harrington’s AC via the online contact form and you’ll be added to the list.
All the events this year have been oversubscribed but I think we managed eventually to slot nearly everyone in for at least one session. Huge, huge thanks as ever to all those who have helped in whatever capacity. Anglers sharing with youngsters their enthusiasm for fishing is what makes the programme works. We are lucky to have a lot of folk who are always willing to help out, including doing tedious but necessary jobs like being on gate duty!
Thanks too to Fishermania, Nathan’s, Ray Garlick and The Angling Trust for their ever-present support. And to the parents/grandparents/carers who don’t just bring their charges to events but often take part and increasingly are taking young anglers fishing outside of our events.

Different venue, same enthusiasm
Derby Young Anglers’ Project latest event was held at Mill Dam, a venue just a short distance from the city centre and a place accessible by public transport. Whilst the pond wasn’t as productive as the other venues used this year, everyone did catch fish with perch, roach, rudd and skimmer bream all coming to the bank. The invasive signal crayfish also made regular appearances with their captures creating much interest. As has been the norm in 2024 the event was oversubscribed, and two sessions were required to accommodate 26 young anglers plus all their family members. Some participants travelled from as far as Leicester and Sheffield to attend.
The number of skilled and dedicated coaches and helpers on hand was again high. This has enabled all sessions to provide, for all those that need it, one-to-one tuition. An increasing number of participants are now though fishing independently with some being able to fish a wide variety of styles, compete effectively in matches, and coach other youngsters to fish.
Our next and final event in September will be the now established “Pairs Match” where a young angler and an adult fish together and fill in a scorecard as they go along with points being awarded for each fish caught.
A number of our young anglers are now “flying” and we are supporting them to diversify their angling. We are promoting and supporting those who want to match fish. Additionally a number can now drop-shot and fly fish, with Ben Lombardo recently catching a rudd on fly. Big thanks to Mark Rogers and Phil Harrison for putting on this specialist programme.
We are aware too that there is a demand for beginner sessions for adults. We have slotted in an informal adults’ session this year but will add an adults’ workshop to next year’s calendar.
Thanks as ever to all those who help, to the parents, grandparents and carers who come along and always “muck in”, to Ray Garlick for his support in storing our mountain of kit, and to The Angling Trust, Nathans of Derby and Fishermania for their ongoing help. Please support our local businesses who support us.

Just phew!
On Saturday July 13th Derby Young Anglers' Project held their latest oversubscribed event at popular Woodrow's Pond. The venue was as obliging as ever with rudd, roach, perch, gudgeon, tench and carp all being caught. Catch of day was Charle Ellis with his 8lb common carp.
As ever cheese and sausage rolls were served and enjoyed.
The focus of this session was formal assessment for The Angling Trust’s CAST Awards. A significant number of the young anglers are now fishing independently and have therefore attained a Level 2 in this excellent scheme. Ben Lombardo and Ismael Basharet have tied up rigs and flies, have match fished, and have also effectively handled lure and fly casting. They have therefore reached Level 3. Air Cadet Josh Bennett has done all that and by also coaching young anglers at the July event achieved a CAST Award at Level 4. Big well done to all.
Big well done too to 2021 National RiverFest Champion John Lock who coached the project’s developers on the Saturday, and then on the Sunday qualified once again for the RiverFest Final by winning the River Soar heat.
During July there will be a small participant number lure and drop shot workshop. This is to be run by Mark Rogers and Phil Harrison and will be held on a Derby Railway Angling Club Section of the Trent and Mersey Canal. Registration for this event is now closed but we’ll be running other events like this in the future.
The next general coarse fishing event will be held on Sunday August 4th at Mill Dam. This small mixed fishery is over the main road from Markeaton Park, is near the centre of town, and is accessible by public transport. In order to try and accommodate as many young anglers as possible, especially those who are fishing for the first time, we are likely to organise a shift system for this event.
Due to recent emails we are aware that there is a demand for adult sessions for both returnee anglers and new anglers. We recently held a small and successful evening session for four adults but will aim to put an adults’ event into next year’s programme.
Over the weekend of September 14th and 15th we will be supporting any of our young anglers who have entered the Canal and River Trust’s “Celebration of Young People and Angling”. Young anglers in our area who may need a loan of equipment for this event please email The Earl of Harrington’s Angling Club.
DYAP’s 2024 events have seen record numbers attending. Thankfully, and in no small part due to Dave Sharpe applying his powers of persuasion, we’ve also had the needed increase in the number of helpers/coaches. Without these volunteers the events wouldn’t happen.
Big thanks too to Nathan’s, Fishermania, RayGar Ltd, The Angling Trust and parents/grandparents/carers for the appreciated and ever-present support.

Eighteen Got Fishing
A full field of eighteen young anglers “Got Fishing” at Saturday’s latest Derby Young Anglers’ Project event held at The Earl of Harrington's Angling Club beginner friendly Woodrow’s Pond. The sun and moderate northerly didn’t put the fish off. The young anglers were aided by a squad of enthusiastic and able coaches, including David Parr,Dave Sharpe, Gordon Lathwell, Steve Clamp, Mark Rogers, Alex Nelson, John Wheway, Peter Corke, Rich Pope, Carl Lynch and Aaron Pillmore. All the youngsters caught fish, from small gudgeon up to Ismail Basharet’s chunky 4lbs tench. Thanks to Nathan's for the free maggots and to The Angling Trust, including their Get Fishing Fund, for their continued financial support. The next event on Sunday July 9th is also at Woodrow's Pond.

All are winners at Trial Pairs’ Match held recently.
The curtain came down on this year’s Derby Area Young Anglers’ Programme with a Trial Pairs’ Match held at Woodrow’s Pond, Darley. All the rapidly developing young anglers caught fish with Imogen Barker’s skill level improvement illustrated by her successful use of bread punch. Watch out for her on the canals! The young anglers were supported by adult coaches though most of them now require only minimum help and are fishing independently. Indeed a number of the young anglers are more adept at pole fishing than the organiser, though as has been pointed out that’s not difficult! A points system was used to decide the outcome with one point for a perch, two for a roach … and on, up to eight points for the “golden ticket” of a crucian. No crucians were caught, next time maybe.
The outcome was very close with the winner Stanley Barnes (supported by Dave Parr) just pipping Charlie Watson (supported by Mike Marson) by 19 points to 18. Third place was decided by the same margin with Wyatt Sukar (supported by Chris Heyes) squeezing past Charlie Ellis (supported by Connor Hudson) by 14 points to 13.
Given the success of this event and that an increasing number of the participants can now fish independently it is likely that we will have hold a junior match based on points at around the same time next year.
Thanks to all who helped on the day, Paul Cockerham, Mike Marson, Niall Meakin, James Madeley, Dave Sharpe, Steve Clamp, Dave Parr, Richard Froud, Mark Dear, Chris Heyes, Steve Clamp and Connor Hudson. The skill and the season long enthusiasm and commitment of our army of helpers make these events the success that they are. Thanks as ever too to Nathan’s and Fishermania for the help they provide in many ways not least through providing free bait. Mega thanks too to Ray Garlick for storing all the kid's tackle. What a help this is. SHOP LOCAL!
A full programme of events for 2023 will be circulated in January. The first event is likely to be in January or February with a return of the popular rig tying and fly casting tuition workshop.

WOODROW’S POND
Woodrow’s wows again
Fifteen young anglers, some fishing for the first time, others now well into the swing of angling, descended last Sunday onto Woodrow’s Pond, Darley. Assisted by an enthusiastic and experienced army of adult coaches all the youngsters caught, expressed delight in the event, and were keen to get back fishing as soon as they could. Hot dogs were wolfed down and one lad, Riley, had the excitement of landing a beautifully conditioned double-figure common carp. The next Derby Area Young Angler event on Saturday June 25th is oversubscribed, though there are a few places still available for the event at Woodrow’s on Sunday July 17th, and at the Fun Day at Alvaston Lake Sunday July 24th.
Huge thanks to Dave Sharpe, Dave Parr, Richard Froud, Andy Hume, Paul Cockerham, Dale Smith, Mark Dear, John Wheway, Peter Corke, Pete Sheppard, Niall Meakin, James Madeley and Will Allsop, also to Lee Foster for helping Dave Sharpe with the thankless task of getting all the fishing kit back into storage. Thanks too to Ray Garlick and his team for as always storing our kid’s fishing tackle and to Nathan’s for our free maggots.
SPECIAL MENTION TO STEVE CLAMP - WITHOUT HIM THESE EVENTS WOULDN'T HAPPEN - 3 CHEERS FOR CLAMPY

How proud is the Earl!
Young Charlie Beetham has been coming to the Derby Area Beginner Junior Sessions since we started them in 2018. He has really worked hard to develop his skills to a high standard and on Sunday he won, yes WON, the Cadets' NATIONAL Championship held and organised by The Canal and River Trust on the Shropshire Union Canal. Massive, massive congratulations to Charlie and to the coaches who have helped him along the way. Special thanks to Steve Clamp for driving getting the Kids into Fishing. It wouldn't have happened without you and our great team.

What a very pleasant Sunday and a great time had by all at the Pike Workshop/Social on Haslams. A huge thanks to everyone that donated to the Earl's Charity of the Season (Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People). Your generosity amounted to £150 which is fantastic. Great to see the Kids fishing alongside Adults. Many thanks to the guys from the PAC for supporting this event and to Steve Clamp for organising. The Kids did get to see a couple of pike as well. Certificates handed out and we move on to the next event... The Earl really is a Great Club 🎣

Great Earl Day "Let's Tie Rigs and Flies" session at Chester Green yesterday. Pole rig tying, fly tying and fly casting practice. Super enthusiastic kids and wonderful help from Carl, Kevin, Ken, Pete, Mark Rogers, Phil Harrison, John Lock and Dave Sharpe. Thanks too to Debbie Hume for organising the Scout contingent. Next junior beginner junior/development session Saturday April 4th, Poyser's Pond south of Shardlow. Big thanks goes to Steve Clamp for organising.
14th October 2019
So, that's the last of this year's kid's general beginner coarse fishing events over (though there's still a PAC/DRAC pike event planned for November 24th). Sixteen happy and engaged youngsters on Saturday with some new faces in the mix along with those who are now our regulars. A few fish were caught, everyone had a good time, books and tackle prizes were given out in a free raffle, Eddy Green won the plaque for biggest fish - a pristine 8 ounce roach - and Macauley Severn won the most fish plaque. Oh and 75 hotdogs were consumed. Just one braved it on a very wet Sunday - Harrison, a first timer - he's the one in the photo with a carp. "Can I go next week?" he asked his dad at the end.
Eleven events during 2019 (12 if you include the rigs and knots session) have been held and average attendance overall has been 14 with a maximum number of 22. Massive thanks to all who have helped in any of the events.
This weekend thanks to Dave, Richard, Mick, Pete, Andy, Kevin, John, John, Val, Mark, Phil, Derrick, Jillian, and Brian.(not forgetting Ken who always ties up the rigs). Thanks here too to Pat Gough who has donated a huge amount of pristine tackle to our ever growing collection of kit for the youngsters. And ongoing thanks to both Nathans and Fishermania who always willingly provide bait and other needed stuff free. Shop local. Use em, or lose em. Oh, and big thanks too to Ray Garlick who lets us store all the junior kit in his warehouse. Top bloke.
Discussions today about next year. We'll produce a calendar for 2020 like this year and are likely to include a junior match, a river/pond dipping aquatic insects study session and a fly fishing event.

28th January 2019
The morning of Saturday January 26th saw sixteen engaged and enthusiastic youngsters attend a rig and knot tying workshop hosted by The Earl of Harrington's AC. Part of the "Let's Fish Derby" series of events that aims to increase junior participation in angling, the event saw young people from the ages of 6 to 14 tying different angling relevant knots, putting up rods and whips, experimenting with carp rigs and baits, and making up pole rigs. Participation contributes towards these "angling students" achieving their Level 2 Cast Award, and the Scouts' Angling Badge. Next up in the "Let's Fish Derby" series is "Let's Spring into Fishing" to be held at Woodrow's Pond on Wednesday April 17th. An additional event for the Scouts is to be held on the same venue on Saturday April 6th. The success of the events is down to a number of factors not least the active support of parents and carers, the commitment and enthusiasm of the youngsters, and the involvement of the able volunteer helpers. Big thanks to Steve Clamp for organising and to Dave Sharpe, Pete Sheppard, Ken Fowkes, Gordon Lathwell, Mark Rogers (DRAC), Kevin Jessop (Long Eaton Fed) and John Lock. Very Proud Indeed 🎣

Let’s Go Fishing Again!
A follow up session to the successful Let’s Go Fishing events held in the summer is planned for Wednesday 31st October.
The event will take place from 10.30 a.m. until 2.30 p.m. (but drop in and out is ok any time during that period) at Woodrow's Pond, Darley . For those that haven't been to this venue it is down a track off Haslam's Lane almost opposite Derby Rugby Club.
In addition to the type of fishing we did in August we'll also be trying new techniques including casting with a rod and a reel, and, subject to conditions, safety and development level, spin fishing in the river.
We'll also be recognising the developing skill level of the participants by providing access to the Angling Trust’s CAST awards.
Would be participants please register by emailing Steve Clamp – [email protected]
You don’t have to have attended one of the summer events to come.
The weather at the end of October is likely to be very different to that that we experienced in August so we'll aim to be active!

LET'S GO FISHING - NATIONAL FISHING EVENT 2018
First event of this kind on the Earl and am sure will now be an annual event. Very successful events at Mill Dam and Woodrow's Pond. Organised by Steve Clamp, Level 2 Angling Coach and our fantastic volunteers. Thanks to John Lock, Matt Lamb and Andy Ells for travelling down from Sheffield on Saturday. Also to any bailiffs that helped. If we have the volunteers, it means these events can definitely continue. Lastly, thanking the parents/carers and the children for coming along - without you it would have been rubbish!
